As much as I want my clients to believe I can not be in two places at once. That said I will miss an opportunity to capture a moment somewhere in the day. I accept it. It is part of the job, yet at the end of the wedding when I have time to reflect, I will no doubt have thoughts of “wish I could of” scenarios. I’m not haunted by these thoughts. Yet I still think of ways to improve upon my performance. That’s my job. And so at the next wedding I will once again be faced with the “wish I could of” moments. Maybe I’ll just have less of them bouncing in my head.

Has this happened to you or to someone you know? It has been common practice among wedding photographers to over-book dates on their calendar. They simply contract out to staff or freelance shooters to cover an event. But this practice of substitute shooting is slowly changing with a new breed of wedding photographers coming into the business from the advertising world.
These commercial shooters have trained their eye on lifestyle and portrait shoots and from assignment work that has graced the covers of fashion magazines, ads and editorial pages. Their wedding work is more apt to resemble something you would see in a consumer magazine with more candid moments, less traditional photos and surely less posed shots. Some call this type of photography photojournalism. Wedding photojournalists like to think of themselves as artists. They live for those candid moments and get fired up when shooting wedding guests that bring on great expressions of fun.
These wedding photographers have made their living based on their specific style and wouldn’t farm out work to another shooter. They did not rely on others to photograph their assignments and they would never let others shoot weddings they themselves have been awarded. So if you are planning to meet with a wedding photographer, see the person’s portfolio and make sure that person is the one that shows up on your wedding day.

When first meeting prospective brides and grooms, I get an idea of the type of people they are and what they are looking for in their wedding photographer. Generally speaking, if the couple is outgoing and gregarious, their photos will reflect their energy. By contrast, if they are reserved or of a more serious nature, their photos will reflect that too.
Some couples want traditional wedding photos with family groupings that are decided upon before hand. Some couples look for off the cuff moments and major surprises. Some will provide more spontaneous fun for the camera. So, what type are you?
The wedding photographer is there to record the event. The couple is there to enjoy the moment. They shouldn’t worry if the photographer is getting great shots. If the couple has complete faith in their hire then a good wedding photographer will take care of the rest no matter what personality the couple exude. Live for the moment. The memories will be there when the day is over. So relax and enjoy yourselves. It’s a party! And you might be surprised by the final results.
